News Flash About Pricing!!!: The Consignor has just decided
to get this gun sold quickly! The new lowered auction starting price for this
special gun is now $3,000 lower than when we first listed it. It is also
that much lower than the value figure that was established by the owner back in
2004. That figure was based on his fair labor and plating costs, etc., for that
time period.
I. Imported by
Robinson Armament, this gun started out as the venerable “K” model, in the 7.62
X 39mm caliber. There’s so much to tell about this gun, but I’ll (try) to keep
it to the high points. The attention to detail is really something to behold,
that one cannot fully appreciate by just seeing the photos! Some parts are
polished, some are not, depending on what was intended. And I gotta tell you,
photographing gold and chrome surfaces is not my forté! They reflect every
object in the room and look dark in some photos and light in others. I tried to
vary lighting etc., which is why there are so many photos.
II. Although I’m calling this
gun “New” (see our “Firearm Standards” link under the “Additional Terms of
Sale” tab above), it has occasionally been very carefully held. Oh yes, the
polished charging handle has been pulled back and the trigger squeezed a few
times, but only for testing operation. Since over 70 hours of custom work was
performed, it has never
been fired. But, this gun wasn’t just made pretty—it was made to shoot!
III. It was purchased in 2001
with the express purpose of taking the very finest made AK-47 and creating the
very best looking, best shooting AK—for the owner to keep forever. The work was
completed in 2002 by a retired custom gunsmith who specialized in making other
peoples guns look awesome! This is the first of his own personal creations to
see the light of day on the auction block. Apparently, his friends and family
think he’s nuts to part with it. I think they’re probably right!
IV. The folks at
Robinson Armament saw this stunning creation and were quite enthusiastic about
it! At one time, they were going to display it on their web site. Just before
that happened, the Molot plant shut down and Robinson (or anybody else) could
no longer import Vepr.
V. There are numerous
customized improvements including the dust cover, trigger, feed ramp, chamber,
compensator, mag release, etc., etc. There’s probably some the owner forgot to
tell me about and others you might spot in the photos. For instance, the dust
cover is not the original from the factory. Apparently, the owner was not
satisfied with the loose fit and thickness of it. He found a rigid, heavier version
with a scope riser, but it was way too tight to fit. It took him over 4 hours
of hand filing, but he made the new cover fit snug and tight with no wobble.
You won’t find many (any?) AKs with nice tight fitting dust covers. By design,
the trigger has a crisp, ultra-smooth, 5-pound pull which is what the owner
felt was appropriate for this gun.
VI. Now, let’s talk about the
rich, polished plating. In addition to obvious external parts, there is
polishing and plating on many key internal wearing parts (for lots of
shooting). The following is a direct quote from the owner’s written consignment
description:
“Traditional gunsmiths are virtually never
knowledgeable about plating. Conversely, platers rarely know squat about
smithing! I am both an accomplished plater and gunsmith—a very rare, if not
totally unique combination. Parts have to be precisely prepared just so, in
order to apply the desired thickness of plate, and have them fit properly. So
much of the plating I’ve seen (especially gold), on hundreds of various factory
(and other custom) guns, was really pathetic. The deficient plating is
typically very thin, without the proper base metals underneath the gold. Also,
some, maybe all plating companies tend to be real tightwads when it comes to
their gold usage. You tell them you want heavy plating, they’ll charge you for
it—but will still give you as little as they can get by with! To a lei person
(or unknowledgeable gunsmith), a really thin layer of gold (with improper
foundation) looks similar to a really decent one. The 24kt gold (and chrome)
plating on my gun is substantial and was liberally applied by me personally at
a large, high-tech facility—it will last a lifetime! If you took your AK into
most any gunsmith, or the parts into any plating company, you would absolutely never
get the ultra-quality plating my Vepr has!!! And with today’s gold prices, the
cost would be three to four times what it was when I customized this gun. I had
intended to keep this gun forever—and that’s how I built it.”
VII. The Vepr K Custom Gold Edition comes with
one 30-round gold plated magazine, factory box with manual, and cleaning kit
with rod (all items in photos). The (multi) gold-touched C-More red-dot scope
is not, part of this auction and does not go with the gun. I also
compiled a lot of interesting information about Vepr rifles at this link on my
website: “Why Buy A Vepr”.
VIII. In closing, I doubt you’ve ever seen an AK (certainly
not a Vepr) anywhere near the likes of this one! If we didn’t have a policy
prohibiting us from buying our consignment firearms—this would already be mine!
Can you just imagine what your cronies would say if you brought this out to the
range? Make this your ultimate gift to yourself this year…you won’t be sorry!
VIV. Note
About Consignors: I know most of you
will just ignore this like I’m talking to a wall, but it remains a
fact—Consignors can be a fickle bunch when it comes to selling their guns.
Hell, I’ve had them read my (wonderful) descriptions and become re-sold on
their guns! At any time, if there are no bids, the Consignors can tell
me to raise prices or even cancel the auctions! Believe me, I do this way more
often than I’d like to. However, as soon as there is a bid, the auctions can’t
be stopped, and someone (like you) is going to get that/this gun! So (if you
haven’t guessed it) the moral of this short-story is once you’ve made the
decision to buy—don’t wait until the last minute to bid. Now, if you’ve read
this far, you know you want it—so bid! Thanks.
